2008 Beijing Summer Olympics

The 2008 summer Olympics are over, and though I hadn’t followed much of the buildup and knew little about the athletes until they were at the games I enjoyed the competition as always. Not so much the main stream sports (basketball, baseball, etc) as those that get little recognition outside of the Olympics; track and field, gymnastics, swimming. I’m already looking forward to the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

Be prepared, however. Some time in 2009, with nothing of substance to discuss and no interest in any sport without the word ‘ball’ tacked on the end, talk radio hosts across the U.S. will continue the tradition of declaring the Olympics passe. No one cares about the Olympics any longer they will insist. The callers will enthusiastically agree.

Thankfully the world is much bigger than Sports Talk Radio* and the dimwits that keep the phone lines lit. And don’t tell them the truth. It’ll rattle their little world.

*I actually love talk radio. In the it’s so bad it’s good kind of way.
