How to Win When Your Middle Relief Sucks
Don’t let them pitch. Jon Lester threw 8 innings of 1 hit ball last night and the Sox offense scratched out a run in the bottom of the ninth to beat Halladay and the Blue Jays.
Over the last 3 games Red Sox starters have pitched 23 of a possible 25 innings (Papelbon and Delcarmen have pitched 1 inning each). Over those 23 innings Red Sox starters have given up 8 hits, struck out 28 hitters, and allowed only 3 earned runs for a compiled ERA of 1.17.
I’m already drooling over the possibility of a 1 through 5 of Beckett, Dice-K, Lester, Buchholz, and Masterson next year.
As an aside, I thoroughly love watching Halladay pitch for the Blue Jays. He’s tremendous and fascinating to watch, unlike another very good pitcher I could name.
