Wang Dominates Red Sox
And with that wonderful headline thoughts on Boston’s 4-1 loss to New York:
- You simply have to tip your hat to Wang. He’s been dominant in the regular season for several years now. Combine tough pitching with a sox lineup that certainly hasn’t hit its stride and the outcome isn’t surprising.
- That said, Wang wasn’t blowing anyone away. There was no lack of well hit balls, just a lack of open places to land. That’s not taking anything away from Wang. Most well pitched games have a certain amount of luck involved. But the Red Sox have done well against Wang before; I see no reason they won’t again. And until he proves he can do it in the post season, which he hasn’t, his dominance comes with a caveat.
- I rarely second guess Terry Francona, but his decision to bring Mike Timlin, 42 and just off the disable list, into the 6th inning of a tie game against the Yankees is about as bad a move as I’ve seen him make. He might as well have wrapped the game up in a pretty pink bow for New York. In a game with no margin of error it was over the minute he put the ball in Timlin’s hand.
- On the bright side Clay Buchholz pitched a hell of a game. Consecutive walks to start the 5th inning contributed to his troubles more than anything Yankee hitters did. If Buchholz and Lester can keep from hurting themselves and allowing hitters to walk their way to first there’s no telling how good either could be.
Later today Beckett takes the hill. That’s why I’m strangely calm.
