Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil
Yankee catcher Jorge Posada recently stated that he believes Roger Clemens’ claim that he’s never used steroids or HGH:
He sounded real truthful the other day and that’s all I wanted to hear. I believe Roger. That’s the guy I believe.
That’s right. Clemens sounded “real truthful”. In other words, more than just truthful. Super-duper truthful. I guess that goes in the same category as ‘giving 110 percent’. Posada gave no other clues as to why he believes Clemens. Maybe it’s because he has no idea what the hell he’s talking about:
Posada, …said he didn’t watch any of the hearing that included former Clemens and Pettitte trainer Brian McNamee…
Pitcher Tim Wakefield, the only player on the Red Sox roster remaining from Clemens’ Boston days also recently stated that he believed Clemens despite not listening to his testimony before Congress.
I realize there’s a code among MLB players and coaches that prevents them from criticizing their peers, but supporting Clemens’ without knowing the details carries no weight. It’s similar to critiquing a movie without ever seeing it, or reviewing an album without ever listening to it. They’d be better off simply keeping their mouths shut.
I have a theory, however, that both Posada and Wakefield did watch the hearing, or at least know the highlights, but are hesitant to admit it. They realize you can’t admit you know the ugly details and support Clemens’ innocence without sounding like an idiot.
What you need is blind faith.
